Your Next Bold Move: Rethinking Career Growth When the Ladder Feels Stuck

career advancement career opportunities professional growth shift Sep 05, 2025

Sometimes the biggest career move begins with one bold question: What do I want now?

That was the theme of a recent career coaching session I had with Sam, a talented professional in the reinsurance industry navigating the uneasy intersection of ambition and organizational change. With 2.5 years under his belt at a global company, Sam sensed it was time to pivot—but wasn’t quite sure how to start, or where to go next.

Like many mid-career professionals, he wasn’t looking to jump ship just for the sake of change. What he was after was alignment—a role that matched his ambition to lead, leveraged his compliance expertise, and created room to grow. But between a saturated market, post-restructure uncertainty, and a few unanswered applications, things felt... stuck.

Here’s the truth: career transitions today require more than just updating your CV or clicking “apply.” They demand strategy, visibility, and intentional connection.

We started with clarity: What are your non-negotiables? What would a leadership role look like? Where does your aspired roles intersect in your skillset?

Then we built the strategy. Not just sending resumes, but building credibility. I recommended he reach out to well-connected professionals in his target field—not to ask for a job, but to start a conversation. This is where doors quietly start to open.

I also reminded him: your current job can still be a launchpad. Use it to learn, position, and plan. Get known in the right rooms, especially on LinkedIn. Join professional associations. Be seen.

Finally, we reframed the idea of starting small. Even junior roles in a new sector you are interested in shifting into can give you the runway and relationships you need for the leap.

So here’s my challenge to you this summer: If you're feeling boxed in or restless—don’t wait for opportunity to knock. Create the map, find your tribe, and walk boldly toward what’s next.

Because careers don’t get stuck. They evolve—when we do.
