The Power of Being Ready: What NextGen Talent Teaches Us About Intentionality

One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is connecting with the next generation of professionals—the ones who are just starting to shape their leadership voices, define their aspirations, and find their place in the professional world.

Not long ago, I connected with Angela, a university student I met during a speed networking session. She’s bright, thoughtful, and like many of her peers, full of potential. During our exchange, Angela shared a moment that stayed with her: someone had asked, “How can I help you?”—and she didn’t know how to respond. That question, simple as it was, caught her off guard. She wasn’t ready.

I offered her one piece of advice: stay ready. Be ready to speak up, to ask, to step forward when opportunity presents itself.

Angela took that moment seriously—and turned it into momentum. She began exploring how she could make a difference for others, launching a passion project to support first-generation college aspirants. But the story doesn’t end there.

Angela has since landed a fantastic role and is off to a strong, successful start in her career. Her story is a powerful reminder that readiness isn’t just about seizing opportunities—it’s about cultivating the mindset to meet them when they come.

This is what NextGen talent brings: curiosity, resilience, and the hunger to contribute meaningfully. What they often need is someone to challenge them gently, believe in them deeply, and create the space for them to rise.

For those of us in leadership roles, advocating for emerging professionals is about more than mentorship—it’s about sharing what readiness looks like, and reminding them that their voice matters now, not just “someday.”

Angela, thank you for reminding me that a simple nudge in the right moment can have a lasting impact. And for everyone else reading this—let’s keep showing up for the next generation. The future is bright when we help them shine.
