When Everything Is Shifting at Once… That’s Your Strategic Moment

career pivot career progression shift Mar 25, 2026

I was recently working with a senior client who, on paper, looked stable. Strong performance. Trusted by leadership. Well-regarded across the organization.

And yet, as we started our session, one sentence captured everything:

“I know I’ve outgrown my role… but nothing is formally changing.”

At the same time, life outside of work was expanding. A significant home purchase underway. Bigger financial commitments. Longer-term lifestyle planning, including international travel. In other words, the stakes both personally and professionally had just gone up.

This is the reality for many mid to senior leaders.

Not crisis. Not instability. But a quiet, critical inflection point

In this case, the organization had recently restructured. Gaps had emerged. My client had stepped in naturally, taking on work well beyond their title. Leadership noticed. Conversations had even started about a potential move into a more senior, revenue-aligned role.

But there was no timeline. No formal process. Just… possibility.

And here is where many experienced professionals get stuck.

They assume that strong performance will carry the opportunity forward.

It does not.

So,  in our session we shifted the approach.

First, we focused on sponsorship, not just support.
At this level, having someone who believes in you is not enough. You need someone who is actively advocating for you in decision-making rooms. That meant structured, consistent engagement with the CEO, clear follow-ups, defined check-ins, and positioning every interaction around business impact.

Second, we reframed their experience as a strategic advantage.
What they had seen as “just doing the job” was, in fact, rare cross-functional expertise. The ability to connect operational insight with commercial decision-making. That became the narrative.

Third, we elevated visibility both internally and externally.
Not noise. Not self-promotion. But thoughtful contribution. Sharing insights, engaging in industry conversations and ensuring their voice was present where it mattered.

And finally, we addressed timing.

There is a window in your career where leaning in creates disproportionate returns, financially, professionally and in terms of influence.

My message to them was simple:

This is not the moment to wait for clarity.
This is the moment to create it.

Because here is what I continue to see in my work with senior leaders:

Opportunities rarely arrive fully formed. They are shaped by those willing to step forward, stay visible and claim the space they are already operating in.

So, if you are delivering beyond your role…
If leadership is “circling” but not committing…
If life is demanding more from you at the same time your career is asking for your next move…

Do not misread the moment.

You are not in limbo.

You are at a strategic turning point.

Move accordingly.
