Hope Is Not Optional: What Today’s Workplace Needs Most from Its Leaders
Mar 27, 2025
What do followers want from their leaders right now? According to Gallup’s 2024 Global Leadership Report, surveying people in 52 countries, the answer is clear—and surprisingly universal: Hope.
By a wide margin—56% to be exact—hope leads the pack ahead of trust, compassion, and stability. And when leaders deliver on hope? Thriving increases by 38%. That’s not just a stat. That’s a wake-up call.
It makes sense, doesn’t it? In a world grappling with political disruption, economic uncertainty, and the relentless advance of AI, the pressure on people at work is intense. The ground beneath us keeps shifting, and employees are looking to their leaders not just for direction—but for something to believe in.
Here’s the thing: We’ve long admired leaders for traits like bravery, innovation, and inspiration. Still valid. But what this report shows is that great leadership today is determined by what people need most—and how well leaders meet those needs.
And right now, the need is hope.
Not vague optimism. Real, grounded hope—rooted in vision, integrity, and the belief that growth and achievement are possible. It shows up when leaders actively support learning and development, communicate a clear direction, and foster a sense of independence and progress.
This means leaders must do two things—and do them well.
First, know yourself. Tap into your strengths and get clear on how you show up.
Second, know the expectations attached to your role. It’s not just about KPIs. It’s about how people feel under your leadership.
The workplace doesn’t need superheroes. It needs humans—leading with intention, empathy, and yes, hope.
So, ask yourself: Are people more hopeful after being led by you?
If the answer is yes, you’re not just leading. You’re building the kind of workplace where people can thrive
